Brand history

The brand owes its name, known until 2006 as MÜHLE-PINSEL, to Otto Johannes Müller. In 1945, a signet in the form of a mill adorned the simple bristle brushes, which were made in a washhouse.

The idea of founding a company suggested itself as the craft of brushmaking is at home here in the Erz Mountains. The products left Stützengrün on horse-drawn carts and even then, as today, they were shipped all over the world.

During the economic miracle years, stylish shaving accessories came back into fashion. In the mid-1950s the idea was born to make a particularly exclusive brush made of badger hair with a mother-of-pearl handle.

In 1968, Hans-Jürgen Müller took over the management of the family business. In 1973, the company was nationalised and became part of the state-owned enterprise Bürstenwerk Schönheide, which produced inexpensive goods mainly for the eastern European market. Their quality was still acknowledged, but the design orientation and individuality of the brand had to take a back seat.

With the demise of the GDR in 1990 came reprivatisation: the foundations for an international brand life were laid for the second time. In the following two decades, the variety of products was expanded to form a high-quality full range – a range which we have been maintaining under the umbrella brand MÜHLE and with a new corporate design since 2006.

The MÜHLE COLLECTION, a small historical museum, opened its doors in 2006. Some 1,000 exhibits from 200 years of history relate informative and curious tales about the art of shaving.

The first complete care series for wet shaving, MÜHLE SKIN CARE, was presented in 2008: soaps, creams and lotions consisting of 99 percent plant materials, beeswax and mineral components. The perfume is made from essential oils and nature-identical substances.

In the same year, we opened the MANUFACTORY, our glass showroom. Visitors can watch the masters of their craft at work and experience how handcrafted unique pieces – brushes and razors – are made using traditional tools.

To mark our 65th anniversary we are presenting the most beautiful and most extensive collection in the brand's history. Its mastery is demonstrated in every detail – from the finely fanned head of the silvertip badger-hair brush to the engraving of the stylish signet on the base of each product with the MÜHLE word mark and logo.
