Horn and wood
Besides buffalo horn, which is distinguished by its beautiful structure and great durability, we focus on olive wood with attractive graining. Bog oak handles are taken from tree trunks that have lain embedded in bogs and can be up to 8,500 years old. The briar burl used frequently for pipe manufacturing is reddish-brown and vividly grained. African Blackwood is highly water resistant by nature. Thuja wood surfaces are sealed in a special process and therefore absolutely 100 percent water resistant. The domestic woods we use include sycamore, ash, beech wood and Finnish pine. The quality of the material combined with lacquers and oil guarantee longevity and lasting beauty.
Chinese lacquer
Urushi is the name given to this traditional craft, now known as Japanese or Chinese lacquer. When MÜHLE processes this cultural commodity, the same requirements apply: a completely dust-free environment, the manual application of numerous layers, and several polishing procedures. The less material used, the finer and deeper the brilliance.
Carbon
Following a complex development process we now also use this high-tech material for an innovative design. This requires that the conventional fibre structures are processed using a special technique. Individual workpieces – later to become the han- dles of brushes and razors – are covered with the fibres. Then they are inserted into a mould, the fibres aligned evenly and hardened with special resin in several worksteps. This produces water resistance, surface hardness and dynamic reflections.
Synthetic
High-grade synthetic resin based on pigmented polyester is turned out of solid rods and polished. Handles made from this material are highly durable and possess outstanding haptic properties. Our handles made from transparent or dyed acrylic glass are also made using this method. A less expensive alternative to this is handles made from polystyrene which are manufactured by injection moulding.
Metal
Metal components made of brass are subsequently plated with chrome or nickel in order to increase their durability. Chrome shines brightly, while nickel appears somewhat darker and warmer. Aluminium, on the other hand, is anodised to harden the surface and to increase its resistance to water and scratching. Stainless steel receives a velvety, matt surface by being satined with fine glass beads.
Porcelain
Our porcelain products are poured into multi-part plaster moulds, trimmed by hand and fired twice. Not until the second firing process does glazing take place in the classic colours black and white.
