The MÜHLE-Manufactory

Brushes made of silvertip badger stem from the old craft of brush-making. At the most, an employee can manufacture 100 “Handcrafted Silvertip Badger” brushes per day. The crowning glory of such a creation: over 20,000 individual hairs join to form a dense, fan-like body whose shimmering silver hair is enhanced by a black band. The high-quality hair taken from the badger‘s back is weighed to the exact gram and combed out, then placed in the form, tied together with twine and glued into a ring clamp. Once the glue has hardened, the brush hair is combined with a stylish handle.

The brush-makers sit at vibration-free tables made of granite. Their tools date back to past centuries: a coarse wooden comb with metal teeth to smooth the hair, steel pliers and a sharp knife. The manufacturing processes for the materi- als used for our handles are modern: chrome and nickel, the high-tech material carbon, woods, stainless steel and porcelain.

Final assembly and quality control are also based in the manufactory. Have the work- pieces been joined together precisely, have they been screwed and glued correctly? Handles made from wood or genuine horn are natural products. Careful checks are made as to whether irregularities in the structure are still “natural” or count as “sub-standard”. After all, only flawless surfaces can be processed perfectly.
