The Right Skincare for Body Shaving
How Preparation and Skincare Can Enhance the Shaving Experience
A thorough body shave does not end with the final stroke of the razor. Sensitive areas such as the legs, underarms or intimate area can react easily to irritation caused by shaving and clothing. This makes the right skincare routine before, during and after shaving all the more important.
Those who choose a safety razor with classic blades often do so consciously, opting for a gentler and more sustainable way to shave. At MÜHLE, we developed the COMPANION specifically for shaving the face, head and body. Thanks to its longer handle and patented razor head, this unisex safety razor supports a comfortable and safe shave, even in hard-to-reach areas. You can find more information on the correct shaving technique and handling in our shaving tips.
With the right skincare products, the shaving experience can be enhanced even further: skin feels smoother, dryness and irritation can be reduced and shaving gradually becomes a relaxing self-care ritual.
1. Caring for the Skin Before Shaving
The foundation for a comfortable body shave is laid during preparation. A relaxing bath or warm shower with a mild shower gel or creamy body soap helps calm the senses and open the pores. Warm water and a high-quality shaving lather also help soften the hair and allow the blade to glide gently across the skin.
Especially for sensitive skin, a mild, lightly fragranced shaving cream with nourishing ingredients is recommended. Formulations containing aloe vera, plant oils or waxes help care for the skin and reduce irritation.
Our recommendation:
The MÜHLE SHAVE CARE Aloe Vera and ORGANIC shaving creams are particularly well suited to body shaving. Both create a rich, creamy lather with minimal effort – even without a shaving bowl or mug.
An additional skincare tip for dry or sensitive skin: the Argan Oil from the MÜHLE ORGANIC range is particularly rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. It supports the skin’s natural regeneration process and provides intensive moisture. Traditionally hand-pressed, this oil is not only a key ingredient within the skincare range but is also available separately in a pipette bottle.
2. Why a Shaving Brush Makes Sense for Body Shaving Too
Many people associate shaving brushes exclusively with traditional facial shaving. In reality, they can also make a noticeable difference when shaving the body.
A shaving brush helps create a particularly rich and stable lather from a small amount of shaving cream. Simply use a slightly damp brush, apply a small amount of shaving cream directly to the skin or brush and work it into a lather using circular motions. This prepares both skin and hair perfectly: hairs are lifted, dead skin cells are gently removed and the evenly distributed lather allows the blade to glide especially smoothly. At the same time, the gentle massage effect of the shaving brush feels wonderfully relaxing.
Shaving brushes with vegan fibres are especially pleasant to use and easy to care for. They create a beautifully creamy lather, feel soft on the skin and can be cleaned with ease.
Our recommendation:
A shaving brush with synthetic fibres. Vegan fibres are particularly low-maintenance, durable and feature pleasantly soft tips. At the same time, they create an exceptionally creamy lather. Ideal entry-level options include the NEO shaving brush with Black Fibre or the TRAVEL shaving brushes fitted with premium Silvertip Fibre.
3. Preventing Razor Burn and Soothing Minor Irritation
Even with a careful shave, the skin can occasionally react sensitively. Minor redness, tightness or small cuts cannot always be avoided, especially in delicate areas.
To soothe the skin after shaving, we first recommend rinsing with cool water. Alum stones or styptic pencils containing alum can then help calm the skin and treat small cuts.
Alum has been a classic part of wet shaving for many years. Its astringent properties help reduce surface bacteria and support skin regeneration. Many people also appreciate it as a natural alternative to conventional deodorants.
Our recommendation:
The alum pen is ideal for treating small cuts and is also perfect for travelling. The larger alum stone can additionally be used as a soothing aftershave treatment or natural deodorant.
4. Moisturising Care After Body Shaving
After shaving, the skin needs one thing above all else: moisture. A high-quality aftershave balm or body lotion helps soothe the skin and support its natural protective barrier.
Products with mild fragrances and nourishing ingredients that absorb quickly without leaving a heavy film on the skin are ideal. Skincare feels particularly pleasant when applied directly after shaving while the skin is still warm.
Our recommendation:
The ORGANIC Body Lotion and ORGANIC Aftershave Balm from MÜHLE contain traditionally hand-pressed argan oil and were specially developed for sensitive skin. Their purely natural ingredients help noticeably reduce dryness and tightness after shaving.
Sustainable Skincare as Part of Shaving Culture
For many people, traditional body shaving has long become more than just a practical part of their grooming routine. High-quality tools, durable materials and consciously selected skincare products create a ritual that brings calm and mindfulness into everyday life.
The MÜHLE ORGANIC skincare range is vegan and BDIH-certified. The argan oil used within the range comes from a Moroccan women’s cooperative and is traded on a fair-trade basis – for a skincare routine that combines skin compatibility, sustainability and shaving culture.
