Why a shaving brush belongs to traditional wet shaving
So much craftsmanship and innovation go into MÜHLE shaving brushes
For many people, traditional wet shaving is more than just daily grooming – it is a small ritual. Warm water, the scent of shaving soap and the steady movements of a shaving brush transform a routine into a mindful moment.
MÜHLE has been devoted to this ritual for more than 80 years. The MÜHLE shaving brush, once born in Otto Johannes Müller’s washroom, has come a long way – and become remarkably elegant. Alongside craftsmanship and precision, MÜHLE has always embraced innovation and exceptional materials.
But what is it that has made MÜHLE shaving brushes so distinctive for decades?
Why a shaving brush improves your shave
A shaving brush fulfils several functions at once. It creates a dense, creamy lather from shaving soap or cream – far more stable than foam from an aerosol can. In addition, high-quality shaving creams and soaps provide excellent glide, supporting a gentle and irritation-free shave.
When working up the lather, more happens than one might expect: the circular motion of the brush gently massages both skin and hair. Dead skin cells are removed, the pores open and the beard hair is lifted further. This allows it to be cut closer to the root – the secret to a long-lasting smooth skin feel. Interestingly, beard hair has a similar strength to copper wire of the same thickness. However, if enough time is given to lathering (2–3 minutes), even stubborn hairs are softened, allowing the blade to cut without resistance. This helps prevent inflammation of the hair follicles. The result is a close, comfortable shave with significantly reduced skin irritation.
A welcome side effect: the massage of the shaving brush transforms a quick routine into a calming ritual. And not only for facial shaving – when used for body shaving, the rich lather and massage effect ensure optimal preparation and an especially gentle shaving experience.
Five hair grades for different shaving preferences
Choosing a MÜHLE shaving brush means selecting from five different hair grades. While traditionalists still favour badger hair, the modern side of shaving culture is reflected in our specially developed synthetic fibres – above all, the premium fibre Silvertip Fibre®.
SILVERTIP FIBRE®
This durable synthetic fibre is a global innovation and proof that technology can surpass nature. Suitable for vegans, the fibres are made from 37 % renewable, plant-based raw materials, are easy to care for and dry faster than any natural hair. Hand-processed, they are particularly soft at the tips, while the lower part of the brush remains firmer and provides sufficient backbone – even when wet – for a pleasant massage effect. Silvertip Fibre® also produces a rich lather even with minimal amounts of soap or cream.
BLACK FIBRE
Black Fibre is another innovation from our manufactory. With its dark colouring, the synthetic fibre resembles natural badger hair, yet is significantly more durable and at the same time softer at the tips than the natural material.
SILVERTIP BADGER
For lovers of classic materials, MÜHLE also offers high-quality natural hair grades. Traditionally, Silvertip badger is considered the finest quality. Its distinguishing features are the silvery shimmer, fine soft tips and the characteristic dark band in each hair – known among connoisseurs as the “mirror”. At MÜHLE, this precious material is processed exclusively by hand.
FINE BADGER HAIR
Fine badger hair is also of very high quality, though somewhat firmer. Its light grey tones include the typical dark band associated with premium badger hair. In the MÜHLE manufactory, the natural material is carefully shaped to the highest standards to achieve the perfectly rounded brush head.
PURE BADGER
Pure badger combines wet shaving and facial massage. With its darker colouring, ranging from brownish grey to black, it represents a particularly solid quality. The brush head is machine-made and then refined according to the high standards of the MÜHLE manufactory.
Handcrafted in the MÜHLE manufactory in the Ore Mountains
A look behind the scenes at the MÜHLE manufactory reveals just how much craftsmanship goes into a shaving brush. Premium models made with Silvertip Fibre®, Silvertip badger and fine badger hair are still traditionally hand-tied. From blending the supplied hair to the finished brush, numerous precise steps and a great deal of expertise are required.
Anyone who has visited MÜHLE will remember the sound of the tapping vessels. Weighed to a tenth of a gram, carefully aligned and combed, the hair is shaped in a distinctive rhythm. The hairs are arranged so that their natural tips remain fully intact. The result is particularly dense brush heads with a uniformly rounded shape and the characteristic dark band – also known as the “mirror”.
A true mark of quality: every stray hair must be removed by hand using tweezers. During the binding process and the fitting of the ring, nothing may shift. Once this step is successfully completed and the ring is securely bonded, the high-quality handles are joined with the brush head.
Each finished shaving brush is then carefully inspected before being packaged in the signature grey tubes and boxes of the MÜHLE manufactory and sent on its journey to bathrooms around the world.
Durability and sustainability in MÜHLE shaving brushes
The longevity of a shaving brush is reflected not only in its craftsmanship, but also in its innovative design. Synthetic fibres such as Silvertip Fibre® and Black Fibre show minimal signs of wear and therefore offer a significantly longer lifespan.
Our replaceable brush heads also help conserve resources, as the high-quality handle can continue to be used. These are now available across almost all MÜHLE design series – including EDITION, PURIST, KOSMO, TRADITIONAL, ROCCA, HEXAGON and SOPHIST. Should replacement ever become necessary despite proper care, suitable spare heads are available in the MÜHLE range – a small yet effective concept for long-lasting shaving culture.
Why a shaving brush is still worth it
With the renewed appreciation of shaving soap and shaving cream, the shaving brush has also experienced a renaissance in recent years. Countless testimonials confirm how essential a shaving brush is for a gentle, thorough shave – and how noticeably it improves the results. Anyone who tries shaving with a brush quickly discovers how much more pleasant and mindful it feels – and how an everyday routine becomes an essential ritual of calm and care.
For us, this ritual is both aspiration and commitment. With the handcrafted shaving brushes from our manufactory in the Ore Mountains, MÜHLE not only continues an important craft tradition, but also manufactures products for the shaving culture of tomorrow.
