The Safety Razor FAQ

We answer frequently asked questions

At MÜHLE, we take pride in helping our customers achieve a first-class shaving experience. To assist you in making an informed decision, we have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions about safety razors and how to use them, along with the corresponding answers. Whether you're looking for the right razor or exploring the differences between an open and closed comb, read on for helpful tips!

Are safety razors suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! It may take some practice initially to get used to the technique, but don't be discouraged—once you get the hang of it, shaving will become an enjoyable and rewarding experience. You can also find tips on what to watch out for in our shaving guide.

How does a safety razor differ from a cartridge razor?

A cartridge razor typically features multiple narrow blades housed in a plastic holder, which is attached to the handle using a click or plug-in system, depending on the manufacturer.

In contrast, a safety razor uses a classic razor blade. The razor head usually consists of a screwable upper part (also called the cap) and a lower part (the comb). The blade has a standardized central hole or cutout and is placed between the cap and the comb. Ridges on the underside of the cap help position the blade correctly. The cap and comb are then screwed together with the handle.

What types of safety razors are there? What is the difference between an open and closed comb?

The main distinction between safety razors is the type of comb. If the lower part has teeth, it is called an open comb safety razor. If the lower part has a straight foam edge, it is usually a closed comb.

Most of the safety razors offered by MÜHLE have a closed comb. Our best-selling R 89 with a closed comb is considered one of the gentlest safety razors on the market and is ideal for beginners. An interesting fact: the razor head of the R 89 is also used in all other MÜHLE design series, except for the ROCCA and COMPANION series, which have their own razor head designs.

On the other hand, an open comb razor is more direct and allows for an especially close shave. It is preferred by experienced users and those with very thick beard growth. However, even with thick hair, we recommend starting with a closed comb to get used to shaving with a safety razor. You can find more tips on what to consider when shaving in our guide to the perfect safety razor shave.

Safety razors with an open comb (R 41) are available in the TRADITIONAL design series. It's worth noting that the razor head can be replaced later by purchasing a replacement head (except for the ROCCA and COMPANION series).

When compared to a cartridge razor, is it cheaper to swap to a safety razor?

Yes, switching is definitely worth it. To provide a clear comparison, let’s look at some concrete numbers using MÜHLE products: Gillette, a cartridge blade manufacturer, recommends replacing its razor blades after 7-10 shaves. If you shave every other day, you would ideally replace your blades every 2-3 weeks. Over the course of a year, you would use about 21 Gillette razor blades. Currently, a pack of 8 Gillette Fusion ProGlide blades costs €24.95. At a price of around €3.12 per blade, this amounts to approximately €65.50 per year

Now, let’s compare this with a safety razor. At MÜHLE, we recommend replacing the blades after 3-5 shaves. If you shave every other day, you would change your blade weekly. Over the course of a year, you would use around 52 blades. MÜHLE razor blades are sold in packs of 10 and cost €2.75 per pack. At around €0.275 per blade, this amounts to annual costs of about €14.30

Compared to cartridge blades, this translates to savings of €51.20. Even when considering the initial purchase of a safety razor like the TRADITIONAL R 89 or the COMPANION, switching is cheaper within the first year. In subsequent years, you will continue to save money and reduce waste.

I’m thinking of swapping to wet shaving. What do I need to get started?

For starters, we recommend a safety razor with a closed comb, matching blades, and a high-quality shaving cream. To enhance your shaving experience, we also suggest a shaving brush and a soothing aftershave balm. Thorough lathering with the brush softens the (facial) hair, allowing the razor to glide more smoothly over the skin. This leads to a particularly gentle shave, reducing the risk of cuts and irritation.

What should I consider when choosing a safety razor?

When selecting a safety razor, the first thing to consider is the razor head (i.e., closed or open comb). Other factors such as handle size, weight, or material depend on your personal preferences. MÜHLE offers a wide range of options, from high-quality resins to noble woods or robust stainless steel. Discover our entire range of safety razors here.

Can women use safety razors too?

Yes, and we have developed the MÜHLE COMPANION, a unisex safety razor specifically designed for gender-neutral shaving. You can find detailed tips on body shaving with a safety razor here.

Which blades can be used in a MÜHLE safety razor?

Classic razor blades have a standardized size and shape and are offered by various manufacturers, so you are not tied to a specific brand. MÜHLE blades are manufactured in Germany and are designed to provide an especially gentle shave. They are available in a compact 10-pack for €2.75 or in a large pack with 200 blades. Of course, they are packaged purely in paper and are fully recyclable.

Are safety razors more environmentally friendly than disposable razors? Are the blades recyclable?

If you want to live more sustainably, a safety razor is definitely a good choice. The high-quality craftsmanship of these razors makes them reliable companions for years. Zero waste is the motto, with completely recyclable paper packaging. The pure metal razor blades can also be recycled. You can read more about what to consider in our blog post on the proper disposal of razor blades.

I’ve heard safety razors are better for the skin, is that true?

Yes. With only one blade and one or two passes, a safety razor provides a smooth, gentle shave. In contrast, the 3 to 5 overlapping blades of a cartridge razor can be much harsher on the skin, potentially causing irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. Additionally, the razor head of a safety razor can be fully opened, allowing for more thorough cleaning between uses, making it easier to shave longer hairs without the blade getting clogged.

However, it's important to note that the quality of your shave largely depends on your preparation. Thorough lathering with a shaving brush softens the (facial) hair, allowing the razor to glide more smoothly over the skin. This results in a particularly gentle shave, with less frequent skin irritation.
